550 gallon
& specialty

Above 350 gallons you leave the standardised world. Oversize IBCs stop fitting pallet positions, stop stacking, and start competing with proper site tanks. Sometimes they are exactly right. Often they are not, and we will say so.

The short answer

550 gallon IBCs hold 2,082 litres, typically measure 62" × 48" × 58" and weigh around 244 lb empty and 4,830 lb full of water. They do not fit a standard pallet position, do not stack, and need a dedicated forklift capacity. They make sense for a fixed installation with limited floor space and no need to move the container; for almost everything else, two 275s are easier and cheaper.

  • 2,082 L in a 62" × 48" footprint — not a standard pallet position
  • 4,830 lb gross on water; check your forklift rating at extended load centre
  • Does not stack; plan floor space accordingly
  • Sourced to order — we do not hold deep stock in this size

When oversize is genuinely the right answer

  • Fixed installations where the container is filled in place and never moves — dosing skids, wash-water storage, rainwater arrays.
  • Floor space is scarce but headroom and floor loading are not.
  • You want fewer connections. One 550 has one valve; two 275s have two valves, two gaskets and two things to leak.
  • Batch sizes that awkwardly straddle 275 and 550, where part-filling a big one beats managing two.

Against that: no stacking, no standard racking, restricted resale market, harder to move when your process changes, and a forklift requirement that catches people out. A 4,830 lb load at a 31-inch load centre is beyond a lot of 5,000 lb trucks once you derate for the extended centre.

?Common questions

Questions people actually ask

Do you stock 550 gallon totes?

Not deeply. They come through occasionally and we source them to order otherwise, typically two to four weeks. Tell us your timeline early on this size.

Can two 275s replace one 550?

Usually yes, and usually better. Two 275s bottom-linked with a manifold give you 550 gallons, one draw point, standard pallet positions, the ability to stack and a far better resale market. Our fabrication bay builds these regularly.

What forklift do I need?

Check your truck's capacity plate at the actual load centre, not the nominal 24-inch rating. A 62-inch-deep container puts the centre of gravity around 31 inches out, which derates most trucks by 15–25 %. A nominal 5,000 lb truck may be a 3,900 lb truck for this load.
