This is the question we answer most often, and the answer nearly always comes down to one thing: does your next product care what the last one was?

The short answer

Buy reconditioned when your product tolerates prior contents — water, wash-down, waste, construction, ag, ballast. Buy rebottled when the interior must be clean but the paperwork does not need to cover every component — food, cosmetics, light-coloured or odour-sensitive products. Buy new when a contract, an insurer or transport regulation demands virgin components and current UN marking.

  • Reconditioned: ≈ 35 % of new price, prior contents present, 1–2 lives left
  • Rebottled: ≈ 60 % of new price, virgin interior, 2–3 lives left
  • New: 100 %, virgin everything, current UN mark, 3–4 lives left
  • Rebottling your own cages is cheaper than all three

The decision tree

  1. Are you offering a regulated liquid for transport under a UN mark? → New, or professionally requalified. Stop here.
  2. Does a customer contract or insurer forbid reused packaging? → New. Argue it once if you think it is unjustified, then comply.
  3. Will the contents be consumed by people or animals? → Rebottled at minimum, or A-grade food with documentation.
  4. Is the product light-coloured, fragranced or odour-sensitive? → Rebottled. Staining and absorbed odour will find you.
  5. Is the product going into a process where trace contamination matters? → Rebottled.
  6. Anything else — water, waste, wash-down, ag, ballast, construction, dust suppression? → Reconditioned, and buy the lowest grade that works.

Look at the cost-per-remaining-life row. On a pure lifecycle basis the three options are remarkably close, which is why the decision is almost never about money — it is about whether the interior history matters to your product.

?Common questions

Questions people actually ask

Is a rebottled tote as good as new?

The part that touches your product is identical — a virgin HDPE bottle. The cage is second-hand steel that has been straightened and inspected. For everything except audited-provenance applications and regulated transport, functionally yes.

Can I upgrade a reconditioned tote later?

Yes. Send it back and we will rebottle it. The cage does not care how many bottles it has held, and that is precisely the point of the whole exercise.

Which do you sell more of?

Reconditioned, by roughly four to one, because most totes carry water, waste or industrial product where history genuinely does not matter. Rebottled is growing fastest — it is what people choose once they understand the option exists.
